Conference League news: Jean-Philippe Mateta seals Crystal Palace triumph as boss Oliver Glasner exits on European high
Jean-Philippe Mateta’s second-half finish proved decisive as Crystal Palace edged Spanish outfit Rayo Vallecano to win the Conference League final on Wednesday, delivering Oliver Glasner a fitting send-off in his final game in charge.
The Palace striker reacted quickest inside the area after the break, converting the rebound that ultimately settled a tense contest and secured the club’s latest milestone under Glasner.
The Austrian manager departs after overseeing the most successful spell in Crystal Palace history, adding the Conference League title to previous FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs during his two-year tenure.
Glasner: A ‘fantastic’ night for fans
"I have to forward the congratulations to the players, to the team, because it was the game that we expected, but I think we played [an] incredible 15 minutes after half-time, where we scored the goal, where we could have decided it,” Glasner told TNT Sports after their final win.
"Then at the end we defended so well, fantastic evening, and I think it's really this group of players, this club, these fans deserve to win the Conference League, and that's why I'm really, really pleased,” he continued, referring to Crystal Palace fans’ loyal backing of the team over the course of the club’s time in Europe this season.
"I can't even believe that this was the last game.
One chapter ends, another begins
"But yes, I took this decision, and I think it's a chapter. I think it's a good chapter to read in the Crystal Palace book, but other chapters will follow,” Glasner said, regarding his choice to move on from his time at the club.
"It's the same, I said to the players, get now what you deserve after winning the FA Cup, that's the Europa League.
"So I think now it's with a one-year delay, the club, the fans, the players did get what they deserved.
"So sometimes, okay, you have to take a round trip, and now we are there. Crystal Palace is where they should be."
Europa League challenge awaits
Glasner’s departure leaves Crystal Palace entering a new phase, but the foundations built during his reign have positioned the club for another major European campaign.
After lifting the Conference League trophy, Palace will now prepare for the tougher demands of Europa League football next season, carrying momentum generated during the most decorated era in the club’s history.
