England news: Thomas Tuchel insists Jude Bellingham must earn World Cup starting spot

England manager Thomas Tuchel says Jude Bellingham faces competition for a place in the starting XI at the FIFA World Cup despite remaining one of the Three Lions' key players.

Bellingham is widely regarded as one of England's most influential stars, but Tuchel believes the strength of the squad means no player can take selection for granted heading into the tournament.

The Real Madrid midfielder has featured regularly under Tuchel, although England's depth in midfield and attack has created fierce competition for starting positions.

Tuchel welcomes competition

Asked whether Bellingham has a fight on his hands to start for England, Tuchel was clear in his response.

"Yes, he has.

"He is one of the starters, he knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters. These roles can always change, but at the moment I think there are like 14 or 15 proper starters and Jude is one of them."

The England boss has repeatedly stressed the importance of competition within the squad ahead of the World Cup, with several established names already missing out on selection.

Bellingham finding his rhythm

Tuchel also praised the 22-year-old's attitude and condition after returning from injury.

"He looks good. He looks good in training.

"I think he is at the moment in a sweet spot because he has had his break and he has the hunger to be back on the pitch and after injury - this is normal.

"And he is so happy to be back on the pitch. You take everything in."

Bellingham is expected to play a significant role in England's World Cup campaign, but Tuchel's comments underline the competitive environment within the squad as the Three Lions prepare for their tournament opener against Croatia.
