FA Cup news: Chelsea steady the ship to set up Man City final after edging Leeds
Chelsea moved to within one win of FA Cup glory after a controlled 1-0 semi-final victory over Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday, April 26, setting up a decisive clash with Manchester City, who overcame Southampton in the other last-four tie.
It wasn’t a flawless display from the Blues, but it was a necessary one.
After a run that had seen them lose seven of their previous eight matches, this was less about flair and more about restoring order, and they did just enough.
Enzo Fernandez’s header in the 23rd minute ultimately separated the sides.
Leeds showed flashes of attacking intent but lacked the cutting edge when it mattered, failing to turn promising moments into a tangible reward.
A season still salvageable
With a major trophy now within reach, Chelsea suddenly have a chance to reshape the narrative of an otherwise inconsistent campaign.
Interim head coach Calum McFarlane, thrust into the role following Liam Rosenior’s dismissal just four days earlier, appeared to prioritise structure and composure - and he got the response he needed.
The performance carried more assurance, even if it lacked complete authority, hinting at a side trying to rediscover its footing at a crucial stage.
His players will, however, need to find another level entirely against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
"It was important to get the win,” McFarlane told Sky Sports. “It was important to break the momentum and the form we were in.
“We were confident that we would do that, and I think that completely changes the feel within the group.
“I think that was probably more important and gives us confidence going into the next five games."
Final in sight
Attention may soon turn to Wembley once more, but for now, McFarlane insists the focus remains narrow.
"You don't even have time to focus on it,” McFarlane continued, referring to the FA Cup final.
“You don't take in the fact that you're playing at Wembley, you're just solely focused on making sure the team's performance is at the highest level so you don't have time to take that all in.
“Maybe [it will] at the end of the season. It's an unbelievable experience for me, but there's so much that's coming thick and fast that you don't even have time to take it all in, in honesty."
Chelsea will meet Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 16, with the chance to turn a turbulent season into a meaningful success.
