Harry Maguire backs Man Utd to compete for trophies ahead of eighth season
Harry Maguire believes Manchester United can challenge for major honours as he prepares for his eighth season at Old Trafford.
The England international has backed Michael Carrick's side to compete at the highest level after Man United finished third in the Premier League last season and secured a return to the Champions League.
Maguire, who joined Man United from Leicester City in 2019, remains an important figure within the squad as Carrick begins his first full season as permanent head coach.
Maguire targets success at Man United
The 33-year-old has experienced considerable highs and lows during his time at Old Trafford, including a period as club captain before falling down the defensive pecking order under previous manager Ruben Amorim.
However, Carrick restored Maguire to a prominent role after taking charge, with the defender starting all five of his first matches and contributing to an improvement in Man United's defensive organisation.
Now entering his eighth season, Maguire says his focus is firmly on winning trophies.
"To play for this club for one would have been a dream come true when I was a young kid, so to be here going into my eighth season, it's something I'm really proud of," Maguire told Sky Sports.
"It's not about me, but at this stage of my career, I want to be part of a successful team and a team that wins."
Premier League title remains the ambition
Maguire accepts expectations remain high at Man United, particularly after their return to the Champions League.
"Everyone wants to win the Premier League, of course that is going to be our aim, that's what this club demands," he said.
"We have the belief we can be really competitive and we can beat anyone on our day. It's going to be an exciting season."
Man United have strengthened their midfield during the summer with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, while Carlos Baleba is also close to completing a move from Brighton.
The additions are designed to build on the momentum created during Carrick's successful spell last season.
Carrick brings renewed togetherness
Maguire believes the current dressing room is among the closest he has experienced at Old Trafford.
"During my time at the club, we've had some close groups - no doubt this is one of the closest," he said.
"Spending time together and winning football matches brings teams closer."
Carrick's impact was significant last season, winning 11 of his 16 matches after taking over and lifting Man United from seventh to third.
Complacency not an option
Maguire acknowledges there is no room for complacency after that progress.
"Losing that Europa League final, finishing 15th to finishing third and putting the club back in the Champions League, it was a good season but we can't stop here," Maguire added.
For Maguire and Man United, the message is clear: last season's revival has to become the foundation for a team capable of competing for silverware.
