NBA Finals news: Victor Wembanyama leads San Antonio Spurs response in Game 3 victory over New York Knicks

Victor Wembanyama delivered a dominant all-round performance as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks 115-111 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, June 9.

After suffering a heartbreaking Game 2 defeat, the Spurs responded with composure and resilience to cut the series deficit to 2-1, led by another superstar display from Wembanyama and valuable contributions throughout the rotation.

The contest remained tightly balanced for much of the evening before San Antonio executed more effectively in the closing stages to secure a crucial road victory.

Wembanyama answers the call

The Spurs needed a response from their franchise cornerstone and received exactly that.

Wembanyama finished with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals while shooting an efficient 11-for-18 from the field.

His influence extended beyond the box score as San Antonio repeatedly turned to him in key moments down the stretch.

"I'm sure Victor has numerous sources of motivation," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.

"I don't think any of us are surprised or expect anything different than a strong performance."

Wembanyama also highlighted the challenge of winning on the road in one of basketball's most hostile environments.

"At home, it really feels like playing six against five. Here, it feels like five against six," he said.

"It really shows what teams are made of."

Spurs receive support across the floor

While Wembanyama once again led the way, San Antonio's supporting cast played a significant role in the victory.

Stephon Castle produced 23 points, five rebounds and five assists on 8-for-14 shooting, while rookie Dylan Harper continued his impressive finals campaign with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists off the bench.

The Spurs also handled several momentum swings throughout the game, showing far greater composure than they did during their late collapse in Game 2.

Knicks stars perform, but Towns struggles

Jalen Brunson once again carried much of New York's offensive burden.

The Knicks guard finished with 32 points, five rebounds and five assists, although his five turnovers proved costly in such a closely contested game.

OG Anunoby also impressed, scoring 28 points on an efficient 9-for-13 shooting display while adding five rebounds and two blocks.

The bigger issue for New York came from Karl-Anthony Towns.

After playing a decisive role in the Knicks' opening two victories, Towns managed only 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting despite logging 38 minutes.

His reduced impact coincided with New York's first defeat of the series.

Josh Hart added 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Jordan Clarkson contributed 10 points from the bench.

Series firmly alive

The Knicks still hold a 2-1 series advantage, but the momentum of the finals shifted slightly on Tuesday night.

"I tell the guys, it's a seven-game series for a reason," Knicks coach Mike Brown said.

"They are a great team. They are well-coached. They have an iconic player. It's not going to be easy."

After two narrow defeats to open the finals, the Spurs finally found their breakthrough.

With Game 4 also set to take place at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, San Antonio now has an opportunity to level the series before returning home.
