NBA trade news: Minnesota Timberwolves acquire LaMelo Ball in high-profile trade with Charlotte Hornets

The Minnesota Timberwolves have made one of the biggest moves of the NBA offseason after acquiring All-Star guard LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets in a blockbuster trade that could reshape both franchises.

Minnesota will receive Ball and wing Josh Green, while Charlotte acquire forward Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round draft pick, first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029 and 2030, as well as second-round selections in 2029, 2032 and 2033.

The deal was first reported on Thursday and marks another bold move by the Timberwolves as they continue to build around Anthony Edwards.

The trade signals Minnesota's intent to remain among the Western Conference's leading contenders, while Charlotte continue to reshape their roster around a younger core and significant future draft capital.

Timberwolves land long-term playmaker

Ball arrives in Minnesota as one of the league's most dynamic guards.

The former NBA Rookie of the Year has averaged more than 20 points and seven assists per game during his career, establishing himself as one of the NBA's premier playmakers when healthy.

Injuries have interrupted stretches of his development, but the Timberwolves are betting that the 24-year-old can become the long-term backcourt partner for Anthony Edwards.

Adding Ball also addresses one of Minnesota's biggest needs after another deep playoff run, providing an elite passer capable of creating opportunities for Edwards and Rudy Gobert while reducing the offensive burden on the Timberwolves' franchise star.

Josh Green also joins Minnesota, giving the Timberwolves another athletic wing option and additional depth on the perimeter.

Hornets secure proven talent and future assets

For Charlotte, the trade represents a significant shift in direction.

While moving on from Ball ends an era that began when the Hornets selected him third overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, the organisation receives one of the league's most respected frontcourt players in Naz Reid.

The reigning Sixth Man of the Year from the 2023-24 season has developed into one of the NBA's most versatile big men, capable of stretching the floor while providing scoring and rebounding in multiple frontcourt roles.

Perhaps just as importantly, Charlotte have strengthened their long-term flexibility by acquiring an unprotected first-round pick, three future first-round pick swaps and three second-round selections.

Another statement from Minnesota

The Timberwolves have shown throughout the offseason that they are prepared to make aggressive moves in pursuit of an NBA championship.

Following previous roster changes, adding Ball represents another significant investment in surrounding Edwards with high-level talent as Minnesota look to remain among the Western Conference's elite.

Whether the move ultimately delivers a championship remains to be seen, but it immediately gives the Timberwolves one of the NBA's most exciting young backcourts.

For the Hornets, meanwhile, the focus now shifts towards building for the future with a proven contributor in Reid and a substantial collection of draft assets to support the franchise's next chapter.
