Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to miss rest of NFL season after blood clot diagnosis

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in both lungs.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Hurts would be sidelined for the rest of the campaign following further medical evaluations.

The Eagles and his agent, Nicole Lynn, confirmed the diagnosis in a joint statement on Monday.

Early symptoms

Hurts was initially diagnosed with a superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf after the Eagles travelled to London for their Week Five fixture against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, further testing revealed deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning blood clots had also developed in both lungs.

The 28-year-old reportedly spent time in hospital until 4am ahead of Philadelphia’s 34-17 defeat to Jacksonville on October 11, but played in the game before subsequent examinations revealed the extent of his condition.

The Eagles said Hurts was clinically stable and had no significant functional limitations. His treatment will involve anticoagulation medication, commonly known as blood thinners, which prevents him from participating in contact activities, including football.

Long-term effects unlikely

“Jalen's prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” the joint statement read.

The organisation added that Hurts should be able to resume contact football once he has completed treatment and is no longer taking blood thinners. No long-term effects are anticipated.

Hurts has been a central figure for Philadelphia, leading the franchise to a Super Bowl title in February 2025 and earning MVP honours in that game.

His absence represents a significant setback for the Eagles, who will have to continue their campaign without their starting quarterback.

Full recovery a priority

Tanner McKee has taken over under centre, with head coach Nick Sirianni expressing confidence in the backup while emphasising his concern for Hurts’ health.

The priority for Philadelphia will now be ensuring their quarterback makes a full recovery before considering his return to the field.
