Premier League news: Enzo Maresca joins Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's successor
Enzo Maresca has officially returned to Manchester City after signing a three-year contract to succeed Pep Guardiola as the club's new head coach.
The appointment, confirmed on Monday, sees City pay Chelsea more than £17 million in compensation to secure the Italian's return to the Etihad Stadium.
Maresca previously worked as Guardiola's assistant during the club's historic Treble-winning campaign.
Maresca relishing City return
For Maresca, the move marks a homecoming.
Having previously coached Manchester City's Elite Development Squad before serving alongside Guardiola, the 46-year-old arrives with a deep understanding of the club's football philosophy and expectations.
Speaking after his appointment, Maresca described the opportunity as one he could not refuse.
"Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me,” he said, quoted on Sky Sports.
"City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation.
"This will be my third spell here. I know this club, I know the demands and I know the expectations.
"I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City."
Following a club legend
Maresca now faces one of football's biggest managerial challenges.
Guardiola leaves behind one of the most successful eras in Premier League history after transforming Man City into one of Europe's dominant clubs over the past decade.
The Italian, however, is viewed as someone capable of maintaining that philosophy thanks to his previous experience within the club and the possession-based style that has defined his coaching career.
City begin a new era
Manchester City's decision to appoint Maresca signals continuity rather than revolution.
His familiarity with the club's infrastructure, coaching methods and playing philosophy should help ease the transition into life after Guardiola.
Whether he can replicate his predecessor's remarkable success remains to be seen, but Man City believe they have appointed a manager capable of leading the club into its next chapter.
