Premier League news: Michael Carrick strengthens case for permanent boss after Man United v Liverpool win
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick strengthened his case for the permanent manager role after his side defeated Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, May 3.
Carrick has overseen notable derby victories in his second tenure as interim manager, including wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, and now Liverpool - arguably their fiercest historical rivals.
Mainoo: ‘We need to finish the season strong’
Academy starlet Kobbie Mainoo scored the winner with a clean, assertive strike that fell to him at the top of the box.
"To turn it around the way we have done, it's a credit to the players and the manager,” Mainoo told Sky Sports.
“We are just looking forward and still need to finish the season strong.
"We want to just keep on winning and winning… The confidence in not just me but all the players.
“You want to follow him and fight for him. That's what we showed today," Mainoo added, referring to the United boss.
A win for Sir Alex
"Well, I haven't got any update so I don't know the latest as we stand now,” Carrick said, regarding legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson being rushed to hospital after feeling unwell at the stadium before the match.
“I did hear about it before the game so I was aware of it before the game.
"All I can say is I wish him the best. I'm very affected by it, the news, and I just hope he's alright.
“I just don't know the latest but we hope for him to be in good shape and we wish him all the best.
"We certainly think that hopefully the result, when he hears about it, can give him a boost," Carrick continued.
The win puts United in pole position for a third-placed league finish with three games remaining, a remarkable turnaround considering the struggles under former boss Ruben Amorim earlier in the season.
