Springboks analysis: Five players who could define South Africa's 2026 season

The Springboks enter a crucial 2026 campaign as Rassie Erasmus begins building towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

While established stars remain central to South Africa's ambitions, several players will carry added significance this season as the Springboks navigate the Nations Championship and Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu

Few players have elevated their reputation more than Feinberg-Mngomezulu over the past year.

The DHL Stormers playmaker recently claimed the Vodacom URC Players' Player of the Season award after leading the competition in points while also ranking among the leaders for tries, clean breaks and metres gained.

More importantly, he appears increasingly likely to become South Africa's long-term answer at fly-half.

If the Springboks are to maximise their attacking potential heading towards 2027, Feinberg-Mngomezulu will play a major role.

Damian Willemse

The versatility of Damian Willemse remains one of South Africa's greatest assets.

Capable of covering fly-half, centre and full-back, Willemse provides Erasmus with tactical flexibility few international teams can match.

After overcoming injury setbacks, 2026 presents an opportunity for him to re-establish himself as one of the first names on the team sheet.

Pieter-Steph du Toit

Even with younger players emerging, Du Toit remains the heartbeat of the Springbok pack.

His work-rate, defensive intensity and leadership continue to set the standard for the rest of the squad.

As South Africa transitions towards another World Cup cycle, Du Toit's experience could prove invaluable.

Embrose Papier

Few players enjoyed a stronger domestic season than Embrose Papier.

The Vodacom Bulls scrum-half played a central role in their run to another Vodacom URC final and was rewarded with the SA Vodacom URC Player of the Season award.

With competition fierce at scrum-half, Papier has positioned himself firmly in the Springbok conversation.

A strong international season could significantly strengthen his World Cup credentials.

Cameron Hanekom

If one player appears destined for a breakout Springbok campaign, it may be Cameron Hanekom.

The Bulls loose forward has consistently impressed with his carrying ability, work at the breakdown and physicality in contact.

Hanekom already looks capable of competing at Test level and could emerge as one of the most important members of South Africa's next generation.

A season of opportunity

The Springboks possess remarkable depth across almost every position.

However, 2026 is about more than winning Test matches.

It is about identifying the players capable of carrying South Africa into the next World Cup cycle.

For Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Willemse, Du Toit, Papier and Hanekom, the coming months may prove pivotal in shaping both their own futures and that of the Springboks.
