Springboks news: New faces impress as South Africa thrash Barbarians in season opener
The Springboks kicked off their 2026 campaign with an emphatic 80-31 victory over the Barbarians in Gqeberha on Saturday, with several emerging players producing standout performances ahead of the Nations Championship.
Rassie Erasmus' side crossed for 12 tries in an entertaining encounter, with Edwill van der Merwe scoring a hat-trick as South Africa showcased both their attacking depth and squad depth ahead of the Nations Championship.
The Springboks led 40-26 at half-time before pulling away after the break, ultimately running in seven second-half tries to seal a convincing victory.
Van der Merwe steals the headlines
While several players produced eye-catching performances, Van der Merwe emerged as the standout performer.
The wing took his opportunities superbly and finished with three tries in a clinical display that underlined the depth available to the Springboks out wide.
With Kurt-Lee Arendse unavailable following the Vodacom URC final, Van der Merwe seized his opportunity and produced arguably his best performance in Springbok colours.
Debutants and newcomers make their mark
The match also provided an opportunity for several less experienced players to impress.
Former Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton produced a composed performance in the second row and marked the occasion with a try, while Carlu Sadie continued to strengthen his credentials at tighthead prop with another powerful display after featuring prominently for Bordeaux Bègles all season.
Quan Horn's selection at fly-half generated significant discussion before kick-off.
Playing his first professional match in the position, the versatile back showed glimpses of his attacking ability while also experiencing some understandable challenges as he adapted to an unfamiliar role.
The outing nevertheless provided valuable insight into another potential option within the Springbok backline.
Experienced leaders provide platform
South Africa's established internationals also delivered.
The loose-forward trio of Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Jasper Wiese once again demonstrated why they remain the benchmark combination in the Springbok set-up.
Grant Williams injected tempo from scrum-half, while Andre Esterhuizen and Jesse Kriel grew into the contest and offered increasing control in midfield as the game progressed.
Franco Mostert's influence was particularly noticeable alongside Norton, with the veteran lock helping guide the young star through key moments of the match.
Barbarians challenge before fading
Despite the final scoreline, the Barbarians asked several questions of the Springboks during an entertaining first half.
Led by former All Blacks scrum-half TJ Perenara, the visitors disrupted South Africa's rhythm and repeatedly found ways to attack from broken play.
Tomás Albornoz, Franco Molina, Virimi Vakatawa, Alex Nankivell and Andrew Kellaway all impressed as the invitational side showed plenty of ambition with ball-in-hand.
However, the Springboks' superior depth, physicality and conditioning eventually proved decisive as the hosts took complete control after the break.
Positive foundation ahead of Nations Championship
While there will still be areas for Erasmus and his coaching staff to refine, the performance represented an encouraging start to the campaign.
The Springboks showed attacking fluency, exposed several promising newcomers to international rugby and emerged from the fixture with momentum ahead of the Nations Championship.
Perhaps most importantly, the match provided further evidence that South Africa's depth continues to grow.
That may prove just as valuable as the 80 points scored on the day.
