Springboks news: Rassie Erasmus explains 51-man squad selection as focus shifts towards Rugby World Cup 2027
Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus says the decision to select a 51-man squad featuring 21 uncapped players is part of a longer-term strategy aimed at building depth ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Erasmus named a large training group for the season-opening matches against the Barbarians and a South Africa 'A' side against Zimbabwe on Saturday, June 20, blending established internationals with several promising young players.
The squad includes a host of SA U20 and alignment camp graduates as the Springboks continue expanding their player pool ahead of a demanding international calendar.
Erasmus outlines long-term vision
According to Erasmus, the size of the squad reflects both the immediate demands of the opening fixtures and South Africa's broader plans for the future.
"We named a large group of players as we will be selecting a Springbok and SA 'A' team for the season-opening double-header in Gqeberha, and this will be beneficial in the long term as we build the squad, looking forward to next year's Rugby World Cup and beyond," Erasmus told SA Rugby.
The Springbok coach also highlighted the balance between experience and youth within the group.
"There is also an exciting mix of experienced campaigners and young players in this squad, and this formula has worked well for us in the past to ensure a clear pathway to build depth within the group," he added.

Attention turns to the training camp
With the squad now assembled, Erasmus believes much of the groundwork has already been completed through a series of alignment camps held in recent months.
"The coaches have been working around the clock to put the systems in place in the last few months, and the in-person and virtual alignment camps have given most of the players a taste of what to expect," Erasmus continued.
"It's now a matter of implementing what they learned in the boardroom onto the field."
The Springboks face a packed schedule in the coming months, beginning with the Barbarians clash and SA 'A' fixture before attention shifts to the Nations Championship and Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series.
Busy season awaits
Despite the excitement surrounding the new season, Erasmus acknowledged the challenge facing his squad as they prepare for multiple competitions and a demanding Test calendar.
"We are under no illusions about the challenge ahead this season with two matches against the Barbarians and the SA 'A' team against Zimbabwe playing out on the same day, which will be followed by two new competitions in the Nations Championship and Rugby's Greatest Rivalry," Erasmus said.
"It will be important for the group to build cohesion as quickly as possible and make the most of our field sessions and team meetings to be as well prepared as possible when we take the field."
The Springboks will begin their season in Gqeberha on Saturday, June 20 before Erasmus finalises his squad for the Nations Championship on June 21.
