Springboks news: Rassie Erasmus names exciting blend of youth and experience for Barbarians and SA ‘A’ clashes
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus and assistant coach Mzwandile Stick have named a mix of experienced internationals and emerging talent for South Africa's season-opening clashes against the Barbarians and Zimbabwe in Gqeberha on Saturday.
The match will mark the Springboks' first outing of the 2026 campaign and offers several players an opportunity to stake a claim for regular involvement as South Africa prepare for a demanding international season.
Among the notable selections are Stormers lock Riley Norton and utility back Quan Horn, while several established Springboks return to the fold alongside a group of uncapped players looking to impress.
Erasmus keen to assess squad depth
Erasmus explained that the fixture provides an ideal opportunity to expose younger players to international rugby while also giving returning players valuable game time.
"We said from the outset that we wanted to give a few players returning from injury and others who have been playing overseas game time in this match, while at the same time exposing some of the younger players on our radar to top-class international rugby, and we believe this squad reflects those objectives," Erasmus said, quoted on SA Rugby.
The Springbok coach added that he has been encouraged by the way the newer members of the squad have adapted to the national environment.
"We have been very impressed with the way the new players have jumped straight into action and grasped our systems and structures, and we are excited to see what they can do alongside some of our regular Springbok players."
South Africa are building towards a challenging season that includes the Nations Championship and the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series.
Experienced core retained
Despite the introduction of several fresh faces, Erasmus has retained a strong leadership group.
Captain Siya Kolisi starts at openside flank alongside Pieter-Steph du Toit and Jasper Wiese in the loose trio.
The backline also features experienced internationals Cheslin Kolbe, Jesse Kriel, Andre Esterhuizen, Grant Williams and Aphelele Fassi.
Their presence is expected to provide stability as newer players make the step up to international rugby.
Opportunity for emerging players
Several players will view the fixture as an important opportunity to strengthen their standing within the national set-up.
Quan Horn earns a start at fly-half, while Riley Norton packs down in the second row.
On the bench, Paul de Villiers and Vusi Moyo are among the players who could earn valuable minutes against the invitational side.
The match also offers Erasmus and his coaching staff another opportunity to assess depth ahead of a busy international calendar.
Erasmus expecting stern test
The Springbok coach expects the Barbarians to provide a difficult challenge despite the exhibition nature of the fixture.
"They have a group of exciting and experienced players in their squad, and they'll come out guns blazing and try to produce an entertaining style of rugby, which will serve as a good test for us," Erasmus said.
"That said, they are always a tough side to analyse because they have players from all around the world, and a quality coaching team, who will set high standards for them."
Erasmus stressed the importance of focusing on South Africa's own performance rather than the opposition.

SA 'A' also preparing for Zimbabwe
Elsewhere, SA 'A' will face Zimbabwe in the second match of the Gqeberha double-header.
Assistant coach Mzwandile Stick, who will oversee the SA 'A' side, believes the fixture presents another valuable opportunity to assess the country's emerging talent.
"I'm looking forward to seeing what this group of players can do against a determined Zimbabwe outfit, who have qualified for the 2027 World Cup," Stick said.
"The young players and uncapped guys have really slotted in well in the last week, and one can sense the excitement among them to take the field."
Stick added that the fixture will help the coaching staff evaluate depth not only for the current season, but also with an eye on next year's Rugby World Cup.
