UFC Freedom 250 news: Justin Gaethje shocks Ilia Topuria to claim undisputed lightweight title at White House event

Justin Gaethje produced one of the biggest upsets in recent UFC history after defeating Ilia Topuria to become the undisputed lightweight champion in the main event of UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday, June 15.

Fighting on the White House lawn in one of the most unique events the promotion has ever staged, Gaethje weathered an early storm before overwhelming the previously unbeaten champion, forcing a corner stoppage at the end of the fourth round.

The victory handed Gaethje the undisputed lightweight title he has pursued throughout his UFC career and ended Topuria's remarkable reign at the top of the division.

Gaethje survives early pressure

Topuria entered the contest as a significant favourite and initially looked intent on imposing himself on the fight.

The former champion pushed the pace early and enjoyed success during several exchanges, particularly in the second round where he landed damaging body shots and secured a takedown.

However, Gaethje remained composed throughout the opening stages and repeatedly found success with his jab and uppercut.

As the fight progressed, the American's pressure and durability began to take their toll.

Momentum swings in Gaethje's favour

By the third round, Gaethje appeared to have seized control.

The veteran lightweight repeatedly connected with heavy shots, while Topuria's output began to slow significantly.

Gaethje's jab continued to find its target and his uppercut proved particularly effective whenever Topuria attempted to close the distance.

The contest then entered a controversial phase at the end of the third round when Topuria informed his corner that he was struggling with his vision.

An Octagon-side doctor examined the champion before ultimately allowing him to continue.

Topuria rallied briefly in the fourth round and managed another takedown, but Gaethje consistently worked his way back into advantageous positions and continued to land the more damaging strikes.

Corner ends the contest

After four gruelling rounds, Topuria's team elected to stop the fight before the fifth round could begin.

The result handed Gaethje a TKO victory via corner stoppage and sparked emotional celebrations inside the White House grounds.

"I’m from America. Two hundred and fifty years ago we were way bigger than 6-to-1 dogs and look at us thriving now!" Gaethje said afterwards.

"I know that was absolutely legendary because I cannot even believe it."

The new champion also credited his toughness and resilience for carrying him through difficult moments during the fight.

"My durability, my tenacity and my heart will carry through those first two rounds and nobody can outwork me in round three and especially the championship rounds four and five."

Gaethje finally captures undisputed gold

The victory represents one of the defining moments of Gaethje's career.

Widely regarded as one of the UFC's most exciting and violent fighters, the American had previously fallen short in several attempts to secure undisputed championship status.

This time, he delivered on the biggest stage.

"Hard work, baby. I am made for these moments. This sport was made for me," Gaethje said.

"I've shown you why. I'm the most consistent, most exciting guy that's ever been in this cage."

The 37-year-old was also asked about his future following the victory.

"I promised my mom, I wouldn't make a decision tonight," he said when questioned about retirement.

Lightweight division shaken up

The result dramatically alters the landscape of the UFC's lightweight division.

Topuria entered the contest unbeaten and widely considered one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the sport.

Instead, it was Gaethje who delivered the performance of his life.

For the veteran American, the dream of becoming undisputed champion has finally become reality.

For Topuria, attention will now turn to how he responds to the first major setback of his UFC career.
