World Cup 2026: Bukayo Saka hat-trick inspires England to thrilling third-place victory over France
England ended their FIFA World Cup campaign on a high after defeating France 6-4 in a remarkable third-place play-off at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.
Bukayo Saka stole the headlines with a superb hat-trick, while Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa and Jude Bellingham also found the net as Thomas Tuchel's side bounced back from the heartbreak of their semi-final defeat to Argentina to secure England's best World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966.
France twice fought their way back through Kylian Mbappé and Bradley Barcola before Ousmane Dembélé added a late fourth, but England's attacking quality ultimately proved decisive.
Mbappé's brace also saw him become the World Cup's all-time leading goalscorer.
England answered their critics
The biggest difference from the semi-final was England's mindset.
Rather than retreating after taking the lead as they admitted they had done against Argentina, the Three Lions continued to attack, creating chances throughout an end-to-end contest.
Rice opened the scoring inside three minutes before Konsa doubled England's advantage.
Although France repeatedly threatened to mount another comeback, England continued to play on the front foot, with Saka producing one of the finest performances of his international career.
His three-goal display ultimately settled a match that ebbed and flowed for more than 90 minutes.

Saka lets his football do the talking
After the final whistle, Saka admitted he would naturally have liked more opportunities during the tournament but insisted the focus remained on helping England finish strongly.
"Of course, I would love to have played more," Saka told BBC Sport, quoted on Sky Sports.
The Arsenal winger quickly shifted the attention back to his performance.
"I try to do my talking on the pitch," he added.
Asked about criticism surrounding Tuchel after the semi-final defeat, Saka refused to add to the debate.
"When you lose, there's always going to be noise. When you win, there's always going to be noise," Saka continued.
Instead, England's match-winner believed the squad responded in exactly the right way.
"Today we had to finish strong."

Tuchel explains Saka's semi-final omission
One of the biggest talking points entering the match was why Saka had not started England's semi-final defeat to Argentina.
Tuchel explained that his decision had been based purely on a tactical instinct rather than any concern over the winger's fitness.
"He did everything right," Tuchel said.
The England manager revealed he simply believed Morgan Rogers would influence the Argentina match.
"I had just a feeling in the semi-final for Morgan Rogers that he would be involved in something special," Tuchel continued.
Tuchel also joked he had barely managed to keep track of England's goalscorers during the chaotic encounter.
"I was not even aware he had a hat-trick."
The German praised his squad's resilience after an emotionally draining tournament.
"Massive compliment and respect for the mentality we showed."
"Absolutely brilliant," the England manager concluded.

A reminder of England's attacking quality
England's six-goal performance inevitably reignited discussion around the tactical approach taken against Argentina.
Just days earlier, several senior players, including Harry Kane, Marc Guehi and Dan Burn, admitted the team became too defensive after taking the lead in the semi-final.
Against France, England instead continued attacking throughout the contest.
The result was a free-flowing performance that showcased the quality available within Tuchel's squad, with Rice, Konsa, Saka and Bellingham all getting on the scoresheet.

Positives despite semi-final disappointment
England will ultimately leave the United States disappointed not to have reached the World Cup final.
However, victories over elite opposition, another appearance in the tournament's latter stages and an entertaining response against France provide encouraging signs ahead of the next international cycle.
For Saka personally, the afternoon served as a reminder of his importance to England's attack.
His hat-trick was the headline, but perhaps the bigger takeaway was England's willingness to continue playing positively after taking the lead - a lesson learned from the disappointment against Argentina.
The Three Lions may have fallen short of the World Cup final, but they departed with a bronze medal, renewed belief and a performance that hinted at what this talented squad is capable of when it embraces an attacking approach.
