World Cup 2026 news: Spain outclass France to book place in World Cup final

Spain produced one of the performances of the FIFA World Cup to defeat France 2-0 in the semi-finals at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, July 14, booking their place in Sunday's showpiece with a display built on complete midfield control and defensive discipline.

Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro proved enough to separate the European champions from one of the tournament favourites, but the scoreline only told part of the story as Luis de la Fuente's side dictated possession, limited France's attacking threats and deservedly secured their place in the World Cup final.

With Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise largely kept quiet throughout the contest, Spain reinforced why many now consider them the most complete team remaining in the tournament.

Spain control the contest from start to finish

France entered the semi-final boasting one of the tournament's most feared attacks.

By full-time, they had barely created a meaningful opening.

Spain's midfield controlled possession with authority, consistently denying France the opportunity to launch the quick transitions that had carried them through earlier rounds.

Every time Didier Deschamps' side threatened to build momentum, Spain calmly recycled possession and forced the French back into defensive positions.

It was a tactical masterclass built on patience, technical quality and complete trust in their playing philosophy.

France's star attackers silenced

Much of the pre-match attention centred on Mbappé's battle against Spain's defence.

Instead, the French captain endured one of his quietest performances of the tournament.

Spain's defensive structure remained compact throughout, preventing Mbappé from finding space behind the back line while also limiting the influence of Michael Olise and the rest of France's attacking unit.

For a side that had regularly overwhelmed opponents with pace and transition football, France simply never found their rhythm.

De la Fuente's philosophy continues to deliver

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente praised his players after another commanding display.

"We started almost four years ago with an idea and we've been faithful to that idea and it's brought us here," he said, quoted on Sky Sports.

He also had no hesitation in describing the level his side has reached.

"Today we faced one of the best national teams in the world, but in front of them they had the best team in the world. That is different."

"These players deserve everything... they make the difficult look easy," he added.

The victory was another demonstration of a project that has steadily evolved into one of international football's benchmarks.

France admit they fell short

France manager Didier Deschamps acknowledged his side were second best on the night.

"The players are devastated because we had high ambitions," Deschamps said.

"We have to admit that today we were a notch below our usual level technically, facing a team that really had a handle on the game."

He also pointed to his team's inability to make the most of promising attacking situations.

"We fell short and weren't as dangerous in attack as we could have been... That's the reality of the elite level, even if it hurts."

It was a frank assessment of a performance that never reached the standards France had produced throughout much of the tournament.

One step from history

Spain now move within one victory of lifting another World Cup trophy.

After combining defensive organisation with complete control in midfield, they enter the final full of confidence regardless of whether England or Argentina emerge from the other semi-final.

If they reproduce this level again, they will take some stopping.

Because against France, Spain didn't simply win.

They controlled one of the world's best teams from the first whistle to the last.
