Nations Championship news: Handré Pollard shines as Springboks overcome spirited Scotland
The Springboks secured a hard-fought 42-28 victory over Scotland in the Nations Championship on Saturday, July 11, eventually pulling away in the closing stages after being pushed throughout an entertaining contest at Loftus Versfeld.
Handré Pollard delivered one of his most assured performances in recent months to earn the Player of the Match award, while Jesse Kriel and Damian Willemse again underlined their importance as South Africa stretched their winning streak to 10 consecutive Test matches.
Although Scotland repeatedly threatened to turn the game on its head, the Springboks once again found a way to finish strongly when the pressure was at its greatest.
Pollard answers his critics
Much of the attention before kick-off centred on Pollard after a mixed end to his United Rugby Championship campaign and questions surrounding his recent form.
The experienced fly-half responded emphatically.
He controlled territory with authority, kicked accurately from the tee and varied South Africa's attack intelligently, with his perfectly weighted grubber creating the decisive late try for Jesse Kriel after Scotland had fought back into the contest.
The performance served as a timely reminder of why Pollard remains one of the world's premier Test fly-halves when he settles into his rhythm.

Kriel and Willemse continue outstanding form
Kriel's excellent season in green and gold continued with another electric display.
Beyond his late try, the outside centre again led South Africa's defensive line for long periods and consistently found ways to influence the game on both sides of the ball.
Damian Willemse also adapted impressively after starting at inside centre before shifting back to full-back during the second half.
While he looked comfortable in midfield, his move to the back appeared to unlock his natural instincts, allowing him to influence the game more freely in broken play.

Scotland expose areas for improvement
Despite the victory, the Springboks will not be entirely satisfied with aspects of their defensive performance.
After racing into an early 14-0 lead, they allowed Scotland back into the match, with Finn Russell and Sione Tuipulotu orchestrating an impressive spell in which the visitors repeatedly broke the defensive line.
For a period midway through the second half, Scotland consistently created line breaks through sharp handling and intelligent support play, highlighting communication issues that Rassie Erasmus will undoubtedly address before the next round.
Credit, however, should also go to Scotland.
The visitors demonstrated exactly why they remain among the world's leading Test nations, with their back row, led by Rory Darge and Jack Dempsey, competing fiercely at the breakdown throughout.

New faces continue to impress
South Africa's depth was once again evident.
Paul de Villiers continued his encouraging start to international rugby with another industrious display, while Ruan Nortje produced another tireless 80-minute performance in the second row.
Evan Roos also strengthened his case as Jasper Wiese's understudy with an energetic display at number eight, while Grant Williams' arrival from the bench injected fresh tempo just as Scotland threatened to seize momentum.
That impact from the replacements ultimately proved decisive as the Springboks regained control during the closing stages before tries from Zach Porthen and Kriel sealed another impressive Test victory.

Learning while winning
Perhaps the biggest positive for Erasmus was that this was far from a perfect performance.
The Springboks were tested tactically, exposed defensively at times and forced to respond to sustained pressure from one of Europe's strongest sides.
Yet they still scored six tries, extended their unbeaten run and found another way to win.
For a team continuing to rotate players and build squad depth, that ability to learn while still collecting victories may prove just as valuable as the result itself.
