Premier League transfer news: Liverpool hire Andoni Iraola as new manager on two-year deal

Liverpool have appointed former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola as their new manager on a two-year deal following the departure of Arne Slot on May 30.

The 43-year-old Spaniard emerged as the leading candidate to take over at Anfield, with sporting director Richard Hughes playing a key role in the appointment after previously hiring Iraola during his time at Bournemouth.

Liverpool viewed Iraola as the ideal coach to implement a “more aggressive, front-footed style” following Slot's dismissal.

Iraola arrives on Merseyside after a remarkable spell with Bournemouth, guiding the Cherries to a sixth-place Premier League finish and Europa League qualification.

His side also completed an 18-match unbeaten run during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, finishing just three points behind Liverpool by the end of season.

Iraola eager to begin Liverpool journey

The Spaniard admitted he was immediately attracted by the opportunity to manage one of world football's biggest clubs.

"Really excited, really excited," Iraola told Liverpoolfc.com, quoted on Sky Sports.

"Because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it's a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world.

"But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it's a special club.

"You don't need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool."

Iraola also pointed to the supporters, players and opportunity to compete for silverware as major reasons behind accepting the role.

"But obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles.

“I think it cannot be more attractive than this. It's difficult to find it. So, really excited to start."

Big expectations await

Liverpool's hierarchy moved quickly to secure Iraola's services despite interest from several other clubs, with reports suggesting he was the only candidate formally approached during the recruitment process.

His high-intensity style and ability to develop players were among the key reasons Liverpool identified him as Slot's successor.

Those qualities helped transform Bournemouth into one of the Premier League's most impressive teams over the last two seasons.

Iraola is under no illusions about the expectations awaiting him at Anfield, but he made his intentions clear in his first message to supporters.

"I can only say [to the fans] that I want to become one more of you, I want to earn the right to be one of you, so we can enjoy it all together."

The appointment marks the biggest challenge of Iraola's managerial career as he looks to restore Liverpool to title contention and re-establish the club's aggressive identity under a new era.
