UFC news: Dustin Poirier says 'alcohol isn't the answer' after arrest

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier has publicly acknowledged that he needs help following his recent arrest, opening up about the difficulties he has faced since retiring from mixed martial arts.

Poirier addressed the situation in a statement shared on social media after bodycam footage emerged showing the retired fighter being arrested for public intoxication at Atlanta Airport on Sunday, June 21.

The 37-year-old, who retired from professional competition in 2025, said the transition away from fighting has been more challenging than he anticipated.

Poirier addresses incident

In a candid message to supporters, Poirier admitted he has been struggling with life after retirement and accepted responsibility for his actions.

"I'm at the point where I need some help," Poirier wrote on his Instagram, quoted on MMA Fighting.

He added that walking away from fighting "hasn't been easy" and acknowledged that alcohol was not the solution to the challenges he has been experiencing.

Poirier also referenced the impact alcohol had on his father's life and said he was determined not to allow it to negatively affect his own future or his family.

Challenges of retirement

The former lightweight title challenger has spoken openly in the past about the emotional impact of retirement.

After stepping away from the sport following his final fight in 2025, Poirier admitted he missed competition more than he expected and found it difficult adjusting to a life no longer centred around preparing for fights.

Despite remaining involved in MMA through coaching, media appearances and analyst work, Poirier acknowledged that the transition has presented challenges.

Accountability over excuses

What stood out most from Poirier's statement was the absence of excuses.

Rather than disputing the incident or shifting blame, the former UFC star accepted responsibility and made it clear that he intends to seek help and address the underlying issues he is facing.

For many athletes, retirement can be one of the most difficult periods of their lives, particularly after decades of competing at the highest level.

Poirier's willingness to speak openly about those struggles offers a reminder that even some of the toughest competitors in sport can face significant challenges away from competition.

A respected figure in MMA

Throughout his career, Poirier earned widespread respect for his achievements inside the Octagon and his professionalism outside of it.

A former interim UFC lightweight champion and one of the most accomplished fighters of his generation, Poirier built a reputation as one of the sport's most respected figures.

Now, his focus appears to be on taking the necessary steps to improve his well-being and move forward positively.

For Poirier, the latest chapter is no longer about winning fights - It's about ensuring he is healthy and present for himself and the people who matter most to him.
