Vodacom URC news: Leinster end DHL Stormers' title hopes to set up final against Blue Bulls
Leinster booked their place in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship final with a 20-11 victory over the DHL Stormers at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, June 6, ending the Cape Town side's hopes of a second title in five seasons.
The Stormers produced a courageous defensive effort for much of the contest and remained within touching distance deep into the second half, but a lack of sustained attacking pressure ultimately proved costly against one of Europe's premier sides.
Leinster will now face the Vodacom Blue Bulls in the URC final after the Pretoria outfit edged Glasgow Warriors earlier in the day.
Stormers battle bravely
John Dobson's side showed plenty of character throughout the semi-final and refused to allow Leinster to run away with the contest despite spending long periods under pressure.
Jurie Matthee delivered a composed performance for the most part at fly-half, while Damian Willemse provided assurance from the back and Ruhan Nel led from the front in midfield.
However, the Stormers struggled to build enough attacking momentum and lacked the cutting edge that has defined many of their best performances this season.
The absence of injured Springboks playmaker Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was particularly evident, with the visitors unable to consistently find space or unlock the Leinster defence.
Leinster's stars shine through
Even after losing key figures Dan Sheehan and Robbie Henshaw to injury, Leinster continued to find solutions through their wealth of experience and depth.
Jamison Gibson-Park controlled proceedings expertly from scrum-half and delivered a Player of the Match display, dictating territory and tempo throughout the encounter.
Caelan Doris and Josh van der Flier once again underlined their international pedigree before being withdrawn in the second half, while James Lowe proved a constant threat through his offloading ability, physicality and decision-making.
Their collective influence ensured Leinster remained in control whenever the Stormers threatened to build momentum.
Mixed impact from the bench
The Stormers received valuable contributions from replacements Zachary Porthen and Marcel Theunissen, both of whom made positive impacts around the park after entering the contest.
However, other changes failed to produce the desired effect.
Ruan Ackermann was shown a yellow card that was later upgraded to a 20-minute red card for a dangerous cleanout, while Salmaan Moerat was also sent to the sin bin following an incident at the breakdown.
The latter decision proved contentious, with the Stormers captain appearing unaware of the ball becoming dislodged while trapped beneath bodies in the ruck.
Ultimately, the discipline setbacks added to an already difficult task against a Leinster side that rarely allows opponents a route back into the contest.
The defeat brings the Stormers' URC campaign to an end, while Leinster move one step closer to defending their title ahead of a final showdown with the Blue Bulls on Friday, June 19 at Croke Park in Dublin.
