Vodacom URC news: Blue Bulls edge Glasgow Warriors to reach final after gritty semi-final win

The Vodacom Blue Bulls booked their place in the United Rugby Championship final after edging the Glasgow Warriors 22-21 in a tightly-fought semi-final at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Saturday, June 6.

Embrose Papier once again starred for the Pretoria outfit, while the Bulls showed composure and resilience in the closing stages to overcome the defending champions and secure a place in the title decider.

Despite controlling key moments through their powerful scrum, the Bulls were forced to withstand sustained Glasgow pressure throughout much of the contest before sealing victory in dramatic fashion.

Papier leads Bulls through stern Glasgow test

Fresh off being named SA Vodacom URC Player of the Season, Papier delivered another influential display in a match that demanded calm heads and accurate execution.

Johan Grobbelaar also made his presence felt and crossed for a crucial try, while Handre Pollard controlled large parts of the game despite an uncharacteristically difficult afternoon from the kicking tee.

The Springbok fly-half missed three penalty attempts and a conversion, leaving the Bulls with less breathing room than they may have expected heading into the final stages.

Yet when the pressure mounted, the visitors found enough composure to close the game out.

Glasgow challenge Bulls throughout

The former champions caused the Bulls problems for long periods with their high-tempo attack, quick passing game and physicality in contact.

Kyle Steyn proved a constant threat and crossed for two tries, while Sione Tuipulotu delivered another influential performance in midfield.

Up front, Zander Fagerson impressed at tighthead, while Rory Darge and Jack Dempsey helped Glasgow establish momentum before their departures later in the contest.

A penalty try from a dominant maul further underlined Glasgow's ability to apply pressure in key moments.

The Bulls scrum remained a powerful weapon throughout the match, although they were unable to capitalise on it as frequently as they may have liked.

Bulls finish stronger

While the Bulls' back row struggled to impose itself during the opening half, the contest shifted after the interval.

Cameron Hanekom grew into the game and produced a far more influential second-half display, while Marco van Staden and Jeandré Rudolph brought energy and physicality from the bench.

Canan Moodie and Kurt-Lee Arendse also became increasingly influential as the match opened up, helping the Bulls gain territory and momentum when it mattered most.

The decisive moment arrived after a crucial defensive intervention from replacement Stedman Gans, whose tackle halted a dangerous Glasgow attack deep inside Bulls territory.

From there, Pollard found touch, Grobbelaar secured possession from the lineout and eventually kicked the ball out after the 80-minute buzzer to spark celebrations among the travelling side.

The Bulls now advance to the Vodacom URC final, where they will face defending champions Leinster in the competition's showpiece event later this month.
