Vodacom URC news: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu named Players' Player of the Season

DHL Stormers and Springboks fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu has been named the Vodacom United Rugby Championship Players' Player of the Season after being voted the competition's standout performer by the captains and vice-captains from all 16 teams.

The prestigious award recognises the player most respected by his peers, with Feinberg-Mngomezulu earning widespread praise for his “X-Factor moments, game-changing ability, all-round threat” and entertaining style of play.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a remarkable regular season campaign, finishing as the Vodacom URC's leading points scorer with 158 points.

A season to remember

Feinberg-Mngomezulu's influence extended far beyond the points tally.

He finished second for goal-kicking points (113), third for defenders beaten (54) and ranked among the competition's top performers for tries scored (9), clean breaks (20) and metres gained (762).

His ability to impact matches in multiple ways made him one of the most dangerous attacking threats in the competition and a key figure in the DHL Stormers' campaign.

Dobson hails 'generational' talent

DHL Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson believes Feinberg-Mngomezulu's growth over the last season has elevated him to another level.

"I think he is a generational player. We are going to enjoy him for a while to come," Dobson said.

"He has grown up very quickly from being the X-Factor, playing off the cuff guy to taking the responsibility of driving the team.

"When he first came along, it was almost like a party impact, to do something crazy. Now he has got to drive the team forward before his own stuff and he has definitely matured.

“He is the most vocal guy on the field."

Dobson also highlighted the work that takes place away from the spotlight.

"You think it's all this natural ability, but his work ethic and his detail is magnificent. He spends a lot of time previewing the opposition, looking at what their triggers are."

Focus shifts to recovery

While Feinberg-Mngomezulu's latest accolade underlines his growing influence in South African rugby, he is currently focused on recovering from the high-ankle injury he sustained while scoring a try in the DHL Stormers' quarter-final victory over Cardiff.

The injury is expected to keep him sidelined until September, although the Springboks playmaker has targeted a return in time for the Greatest Rugby Rivalry Tour against New Zealand in August.

For now, the Players' Player of the Season award serves as further recognition of a campaign that established Feinberg-Mngomezulu as one of the Vodacom URC's premier talents and worldwide box office attractions.
