Belgian GP: Antonelli tightens grip on F1 title as Russell's championship hopes suffer major blow
Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the Formula One Drivers' Championship with a commanding victory at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, while George Russell endured a disastrous afternoon that could prove decisive in the title race.
Antonelli claimed his sixth victory of the season after a composed drive at Spa-Francorchamps, capitalising on his Mercedes team-mate's first-lap retirement to extend his championship advantage.
By contrast, Russell left Belgium without scoring a point after an early collision with Lewis Hamilton ended his race almost before it had begun.
A championship-defining weekend
Coming into Spa, the Mercedes pair were separated by a narrow margin in one of Formula One's closest title battles.
They left Belgium heading in opposite directions.
Antonelli not only converted pole position into victory but also displayed the composure that has become the hallmark of his remarkable second season.
After briefly losing track position during the race, the Italian reclaimed the lead and controlled the closing stages to deliver another mature performance under pressure.
Meanwhile, Russell's afternoon unravelled almost immediately.
Contact with Hamilton at Turn 5 sent the Briton into the gravel before Mercedes later confirmed technical issues had also compromised his race.
Hamilton received a five-second penalty after stewards judged him responsible for the collision, but the damage to Russell's championship challenge had already been done.
Antonelli continues to grow
What continues to impress about Antonelli's title campaign is not simply the victories but the consistency.
Spa represented another race in which he absorbed pressure, managed changing circumstances and delivered when it mattered most.
Reflecting afterwards, Antonelli admitted he was surprised by the turnaround after describing Spa as one of the lowest moments of his rookie campaign a year earlier.
"From rock bottom to this... it's incredible," the F1 sensation said.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised the 19-year-old's growing maturity, pointing to his calm decision-making and ability to solve problems throughout the race rather than allowing setbacks to derail his performance.

Russell suffers massive setback
If Belgium strengthened one Mercedes driver's championship credentials, it dealt a severe blow to the other.
Russell had arrived at Spa firmly in contention but now faces a significant points deficit after failing to finish.
The Briton was visibly frustrated after the race, insisting ongoing issues with the Mercedes package had left him vulnerable before the incident with Hamilton.
Wolff later accepted responsibility for the team's technical shortcomings.
"It's 100% on us," he said.
The Mercedes boss confirmed that power deployment problems had affected Russell's car, insisting the team would analyse the failures before next weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Momentum firmly with Antonelli
Formula One championships are often decided by momentum as much as outright pace.
Right now, Antonelli has both.
His Belgian Grand Prix victory not only increased his championship lead but reinforced the growing belief that the Italian has become the benchmark driver in the 2026 field.
For Russell, Belgium represented the opposite.
Instead of reducing the gap, he leaves Spa facing an increasingly difficult task to haul his team-mate back into reach.
There is still a long season ahead, but the Belgian Grand Prix may ultimately be remembered as the weekend the championship swung decisively in Antonelli's favour.
Spa did not mathematically decide the title.
It may, however, have changed its direction.
