Nations Championship news: Sloppy Springboks smash Wales despite wasteful display in Durban
The Springboks maintained their perfect start to the Nations Championship with a commanding 43-0 victory over Wales in Durban on Saturday, but the scoreline only told part of the story.
South Africa crossed for seven tries, kept Wales scoreless and extended their unbeaten run, yet Rassie Erasmus' side never truly found the fluency expected of the world champions.
Handling errors, missed opportunities and a stop-start attacking display prevented the Springboks from producing the polished performance many had anticipated.
South Africa's power proved too much
Even without hitting top gear, the Springboks quickly imposed themselves.
Their scrum, maul and breakdown dominance consistently handed South Africa front-foot possession, allowing the backs to capitalise whenever space opened up.
Jasper Wiese opened the scoring before Cobus Reinach, Herschel Jantjies, Jesse Kriel, Paul de Villiers, Jaco Williams and Kurt-Lee Arendse all crossed the whitewash as the Springboks steadily pulled away.

Dominant, but far from clinical
For long periods, however, South Africa looked surprisingly untidy.
Wet conditions contributed to several dropped balls and inaccurate passes, while promising attacking movements regularly broke down through handling mistakes.
Rather than delivering the ruthless display many expected after last year's 73-0 victory over Wales, the Springboks left a number of points on the field.
Reuters described the performance as "sloppy" despite the emphatic margin, noting that South Africa's execution never fully matched their territorial and physical dominance.

New faces continue to impress
Despite the lack of polish, the afternoon provided several encouraging signs for Erasmus.
The heavily rotated side included four debutants, with 20-year-old fly-half Vusi Moyo producing a composed first Test appearance while comfortably directing play behind a dominant forward pack.
Elsewhere, Paul de Villiers delivered an industrious display that earned widespread praise and a Player of the Match award, while Jaco Williams marked his opportunity with a try as South Africa's squad depth continued to shine.
Wales showed greater resilience
Although Wales were held scoreless for the second successive meeting with South Africa, there were still signs of improvement compared with previous encounters.
Head coach Steve Tandy praised his players' effort after the match, while captain Dewi Lake highlighted the progress made despite another heavy defeat.
Wales defended with determination for long periods but struggled to generate meaningful attacking opportunities against South Africa's organised defensive line and relentless physical pressure.

Plenty to improve despite another statement win
Few teams can score seven tries, record a shutout and still leave the field feeling they could have played significantly better.
That was the unusual reality for the Springboks in Durban.
Their set-piece dominance, defensive organisation and physicality once again proved overwhelming, but their execution with ball in hand lacked the precision expected of the world's top-ranked side.
The result keeps South Africa firmly on course in the Nations Championship, yet Erasmus is likely to view the performance as one that offered as many lessons as positives.
For everyone else, however, the warning remains clear.
If a below-par Springbok performance still ends in a 43-0 victory, it underlines just how high the standard has become for the reigning world champions.
