Junior Springbok Kai Pratt faces anti-doping investigation

South African rugby has been dealt another anti-doping setback after Junior Springbok and Sharks prop Kai Pratt became the subject of an ongoing investigation following an adverse analytical finding during routine testing.

The 18-year-old, regarded as one of the country's brightest front-row prospects, has requested that his B-sample be analysed as the disciplinary process continues, with no hearing or sanction yet imposed.

The case has emerged while Pratt is already sidelined with a serious foot injury, ruling him out of the current World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

Pratt requests B-sample analysis

The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed Pratt received a notice of allegation after an out-of-competition test conducted on April 10 returned an adverse analytical finding for what has been reported as an anabolic steroid.

SAIDS CEO Khalid Galant confirmed the prop has chosen to exercise his right to have the B-sample tested before any further disciplinary action is considered.

Importantly, no formal hearing has taken place and no decision regarding a suspension has been made.

Sharks back the anti-doping process

In a statement, the Sharks confirmed they would respect the ongoing process while reiterating their commitment to anti-doping education and player welfare.

The Durban-based franchise said:

"As this is a confidential and ongoing process, we are unable to comment further on any specifics relating to the matter."

The club added:

"The Sharks take all matters relating to player welfare, education and compliance with anti-doping regulations extremely seriously.

"We remain committed to providing our players with the necessary guidance and support regarding their responsibilities under anti-doping regulations, while respecting the processes and rights of all parties involved."

SAIDS outlines next steps

Galant explained that Pratt's positive test originated from routine testing carried out while he was part of the Junior Springbok programme.

He confirmed:

"The player was tested out of competition as part of the testing programme of the Junior Bok squad."

Galant also noted that Pratt has retained legal representation to guide him through the anti-doping process as the investigation continues.

Another difficult moment for South African rugby

The case arrives during a period in which South African rugby has already faced increased scrutiny around anti-doping following several recent investigations involving professional players.

While each matter is assessed independently and under its own circumstances, Pratt's case inevitably adds to broader discussions surrounding education, testing and compliance within the sport.

For now, however, the focus remains on the established process.

Until the B-sample has been analysed and any subsequent hearing has taken place, no conclusion has been reached regarding Pratt's case.
