Premier League news: Tottenham win race to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham
Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Manchester United to one of the Premier League's most sought-after young midfielders after agreeing an £85 million deal to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
The 21-year-old Portugal international has been granted permission to undergo his medical after Spurs reached an agreement with West Ham.
The transfer is expected to become the club's record signing once completed.
Spurs win the race
Fernandes attracted interest from several leading clubs following an impressive individual campaign despite West Ham's relegation.
Manchester United remained firmly in contention throughout negotiations but ultimately decided against matching Tottenham's valuation, with concerns over the overall cost of the deal and uncertainty surrounding the player's preference.
Tottenham, however, moved decisively.
By meeting West Ham's asking price, Spurs secured one of Europe's most highly rated young midfielders and continued what has already become an ambitious summer recruitment drive under Roberto De Zerbi.

A statement of intent
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes the move represents a significant shift in Tottenham's transfer strategy.
"It is great news for Tottenham fans and there will be a lot of excitement as this is something we have never really seen before – they are having a real go in the market,” he said of the deal.
“The previous regime would never have done this.”
Redknapp added that recent struggles, combined with Arsenal's Premier League success, appear to have prompted Spurs to become far more aggressive in the market.
"They've had enough,” Redknapp added. “With Arsenal winning the title, it has almost embarrassed Spurs into action.
“Now we have to act and start buying some proper players."
Why Fernandes?
Although Fernandes has suffered relegation in each of his first two Premier League seasons, his individual performances have consistently impressed.
The Portuguese midfielder combines exceptional work rate with strong ball-winning ability, progressive passing and positional versatility, operating comfortably as both a deep-lying midfielder and a box-to-box number eight.
His underlying numbers for tackles, distance covered and defensive intensity have placed him among the Premier League's standout midfielders, helping explain why Tottenham were prepared to invest such a significant fee.
What happens next?
Fernandes is expected to complete his medical before finalising a long-term contract with Tottenham.
Should the move be completed as expected, it will become one of the biggest transfers of the summer and underline Spurs' determination to strengthen under Roberto De Zerbi ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
For Manchester United, attention is now likely to turn towards alternative midfield targets after missing out on one of their priority summer signings.
